In the year 123 BC Quintus Caecilius Metellus conquered the Island of Mallorca with his fleet, which had existed since 5000 BC. The island of Mallorca, populated in the 3rd century BC. As one of his first official acts, the Roman consul founded the city of Palma, then under the name of Palmaria Palmensis. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 4th century, the city began to decline, which was only stopped when it was conquered by the Arabs in 903. They built up an Arabic-Islamic culture in Palma and were expelled from the island in 1229 by the Aragonese. The Kingdom of Mallorca was then founded (1276), but fell back to the House of Aragon in 1343 after the ruling line died out. The Aragonese expanded the city, including the construction of the La Seu Cathedral and the city fortifications, so that it had around 40,000 inhabitants at its heyday in the 16th century. Together with Aragon, Mallorca later became part of Spain, to which it belongs to this day. In 2015, the newspaper "The Times" voted Palma the most liveable place in the world and thus joined the list of world metropolises.
