Information and situation to Bunyola
The pictorial, small village is situated about 18 km north of Palma, not far from the road to Sóller. The place has got its own stop of the nostalgic train of the railway line “Red bolt” Palma – Sóller. The tourists and local people travel by this train for more than 90 years and enjoy the breathtaking views of the route. It is unknown from where the name Bunyola comes – some assume the name derives from Latin “small vineyard” and later the Arabian changed it into Buniola.
Maybe the name derives directly from the Arabic bunyal. It will probably never be cleared entirely from where the name comes!
The village is located below the Serra d´Alfubia and it is surrounded by olive plantations as well as by orange and lemon groves. But also wine is grown in this area. In the center of the locality there is a church Sant Mateu with its square and cafés. In Bunyola you can admire the most beautiful gardens: Jardins d´Alfábia. The gardens belong to the estate – Moorish horticulture transformed the area rich in water, using smartly built canals, into a real jungle with variety of trees, exotic plants and blooming bushes.
