Information and situation to Sineu

The small locality Sineu is situated more or less in the centre of Majorca and it was populated already in the Roman times. At that times the locality had the name Sinium – and the Arabs made Sineu out of it. In the opinion of king Jaume II Sineu was such a significant locality that he had here his palace built in 1309. In 1583 the nuns took over the palace. In the locality the market is of a great importance – in 1303 it was given a royal privilege. Formerly a trade with animals use to take place here – it is the oldest animals´ market on the island. In the course of time the market changed into a weekly market, where you can get everything.

The agricultural equipment and animals are still for sale here, like many years ago. But also for the tourists the market is an attraction; it extends through the whole old town, up the stairs to the fresh renovated church. It is because of the big market on Wednesday – there are so many visitors coming to the small locality, in the centre of Mallorca. It is more quiet in the railway building that converted into a modern art gallery. The situation of Sineu is practical, the public train Palma-Manacor stops here regularly.
